Our team, composed of three senior software engineering students—Rahaf Alqahtani, Siwar Raslan, and Leen Yarkhan—alongside our supervisor, Dr. Areej Al-Wabil, embarked on this journey inspired by a simple dream: to contribute towards objective tools for autism screening. From the outset, we have been deeply passionate about creating innovative solutions for real-world challenges, particularly in autism screening to address the gap in localized objective screening for autism within our region.

Handify was founded with the vision of using AI to drive inclusivity and improve lives. With a background from École Polytechnique (France) and Harvard University, as well as experience working in the tech industry on AI-powered autonomous vehicles in California and AI applications for healthcare at a Paris-based unicorn, the team saw firsthand the transformative potential of AI — not just for innovation but also for making a real impact on people’s daily lives. This inspired the creation of Handify — an AI-driven solution designed to empower individuals with disabilities and make everyday life more accessible for all.

Our core team possesses cross-functional skill sets needed to build an ocean tech company in the early stage. Paul Grech: With roots in Malta and Puerto Rico, my lifelong connection to the ocean drives my mission to launch this company and protect marine ecosystems for future generations. Prior to Tepper, I worked at Bloomberg in product lifecycle roles, specializing in portfolio risk and analytics software, and later in UX development for buy side applications. At Tepper, I’ve immersed myself in entrepreneurship through roles like lead partner at 99 Tartans, Project Olympus, and the Robotics Institute Pathways Fellowship, alongside internships with Miami-Dade Innovation Authority and Cadence OneFive, where I gained hands-on experience in strategic growth, sustainability, and impact-driven innovation. Rohan Singh: Born and raised in Goa, India, I developed a lifelong passion for the ocean, robotics, and engineering. With a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M and professional experience at Tesla and Toyota, I honed my skills in robotics, automation, and AI, including founding Quaternion Studios to deliver AI-driven solutions to over 30 clients. Now pursuing an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence Engineering at Carnegie Mellon, I am deeply engaged in robotics research, hardware design, and entrepreneurial initiatives, aiming to start a company that drives innovation and meaningful change. Andres Castrillon: I am a mechanical engineer with years of experience in maritime robotics, having worked on underwater vehicle development and unmanned systems including an advanced maritime project at Oceaneering for DARPA. At the University of Florida’s Machine Intelligence Lab, I led AUV and autonomous boat projects for international competitions, focusing on hydrodynamics, control, and waterproofing. Now pursuing an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, specializing in robotic and control systems, I am further developing the skill base needed to build underwater robotic products. Miguel Almeida: Originally from Lisbon, Portugal, my deep connection to the ocean drives my passion for applying AI to aquaculture challenges. With a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Lisbon, I have worked on applications in Bioinformatics, Automated Planning, and LLMs, contributing to large-scale open-source projects such as Hugging Face Transformers. At Deloitte Portugal, I gained hands-on experience in computer vision and AGVs, further honing my ability to develop solutions at scale. Now pursuing an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation at Carnegie Mellon University as a James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellow, I am focused on advancing sustainable AI solutions to make a meaningful impact in the Ocean industry. We are also supported by three advisors, Matthew Johnson-Roberson (Director of the CMU Robotics Institute) Dylan Howell (program manager at Hatch Blue Accelerator) and Dr. Armando Ortega ( Professor of Aquaculture at UH Hilo). Through the future funding we will bring in further personnel that can help us to grow the company faster and meet the needs of our customers. The initial skill set gap that would be best to address as soon as possible is on the marine biology research side, as having an experienced marine biologist that focuses on finfish can help tremendously with the computer vision model development.
