Project Overview
WalkTDY is a smart rehabilitation shoe system we developed as our final-year project to support stroke survivors during daily walking and recovery.
Stroke rehabilitation does not end when patients leave the clinic, but professional support often does. In order to support long-term recovery in a practical and accessible way, WalkTDY uses embedded sensors, cloud-based analysis and machine learning to track gait patterns, identify risky movements such as excessive tilting or imbalanced weight distribution and alert users to potential fall hazards in real-time.
Rather than replacing clinical care, we're extending it into everyday moments such as walking at home, navigating sidewalks or simply rebuilding confidence to go outside. Our goal is to make consistent, data-informed recovery support accessible for families between therapy appointments, when it is often needed the most.
About Team
We are a team of final-year Information Engineering & Media students from Nanyang Technological University, bringing together skills in embedded systems, cloud infrastructure and machine learning.
This project started with a simple question: how can we use our technical training to help people through one of life's most challenging recovery journeys? Conversations with stroke survivors and physiotherapists showed us how isolating recovery can be once formal therapy sessions end.
Developing WalkTDY has pushed us beyond classroom theory into real-world constraints, building hardware that is both accurate yet comfortable, to making AI work reliably on resource-limited devices. Through this process, we have learnt that effective healthcare engineering is not about sophistication, but it is about reliability and accessibility when families need it most. While we continue to learn and iterate, we hope to create something genuinely useful for stroke recovery journeys.
