Project Overview
L-Guard is an IoT-powered black box for road transport that saves lives and strengthens road safety systems. It continuously tracks speed, acceleration, shocks, and location, building a reliable record of daily transport activity. In the event of an accident, L-Guard instantly sends an emergency message to nearby hospitals via GSM, enabling faster response and improved emergency care. Through an integrated hospital dashboard, medical teams can securely access driver details when needed, ensuring accurate and timely intervention.
This device transmits data both online and offline, making it very reliable even in remote areas.
Beyond emergency alerts, L-Guard creates a valuable database of transport and accident history that supports hospitals, insurers, law enforcement, and policymakers in making smarter, data-driven decisions. Designed to be low-cost, resilient, and easy to deploy, L-Guard is positioned to become the standard for road safety in Africa, starting in Rwanda and scaling worldwide.
About Team
We are a builder-led team of software, hardware, design, and operations specialists, all students at the African Leadership University, combining entrepreneurial thinking with hands-on engineering.
L-Guard was formed at a hackathon in March 2025 and has since progressed through ideation, prototype development, MVP completion, and live pilot testing, demonstrating strong execution across critical venture stages.
Our journey began with a winning concept at the Codextreme hackathon, followed by rapid prototyping, user research with riders and institutions, and the development of a functional MVP. Today, L-Guard is currently being piloted in real traffic conditions in Kigali, with devices deployed on motorcycles and live data being collected to refine crash detection and driving behavior models.
We are actively collaborating with MTN Rwanda on a connectivity partnership to support reliable device communication and data transmission. In parallel, we are working closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) Emergency Medical Services, conducting product demos and technical validations, and refining L-Guard to integrate with national EMS workflows, including monitoring ambulance activity and detecting incidents across their fleet.
Helen Ugoeze Okereke – Chief Executive Officer (CEO):
