Project Overview
Breast cancer is a type of a disease in which cancer cells grow around the breast tissues. It has now become
the second most leading cause of death among women. 1 in every 8 women across Germany has a risk to
develop this condition. Every 29 seconds, a breast cancer is diagnosed somewhere around the World.
Around 40,920 women have died in the United States and 45,330 in Germany.
Half of the case gets controlled easily if detected at a very early stage. Early stage breast cancer can reduce
death rates in a long term. Usually patients delay in getting a medical examination due to two reasons:
1) Patient delaying in seeking medical attention as not taking seriously, the reason behind breast pain
or appearance
2) The appointments at the hospital and their systems.
Many experts have studied various breast cancer diagnostic approaches which span across mammography,
magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, computerized tomography, positron emission tomography and
biopsy. Unfortunately, these techniques have certain limitations such as being expensive, time consuming
and being not suitable for young women. Some early signs of breast cancer are change in temperature due
to inflammation, physical appearance and pain.
Bee Protect is a medical device which follows three basic steps before expensive doctor visits to detect
breast cancer, it provides a comfortable method of self-examination before undergoing medical visits. The
three basic steps are heat analysis, physical evaluation and pain metrics. The three steps to monitor a
breast’s health, can be easily performed after every 10-20 days, within seconds through the device and the
mobile app.
About Team
Almost six months ago, students from University of Paderborn, from Computer Science major, decided to
form a team to solve the increasing problem of late breast cancer detection. It was found that one of their
friend suffered a minor pain at her right breast, almost a year ago, later this turned out to be strange lumps
and redness over the breast area. She didn’t take up the issue seriously until it grew worse. Two months
ago, she breathed her last. She really wanted to aware other women about early breast detection and
severity. Our team decided to take her mission forward and came to know that Imagine Cup seems to be
the best platform where the team could use technology and it’s wonders.
